"When Disaster Strikes, Community Rises: Henry County Rallies to Restore Hope After Tornado"

written by Andreal Mallard Sr

When tragedy strikes, true community is revealed—not in moments of comfort, but in the response to chaos. This truth became all too real in Henry County, Georgia, when a devastating tornado tore through the Locust Grove area last week, destroying homes, scattering lives, and landing one family in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Among the hardest hit was actor and beloved community member Tray Chaney, best known for his roles on The Wire and Saints & Sinners. Chaney’s home was completely destroyed in the storm, and his son, Malachi Chaney, was critically injured after being thrown nearly 300 feet from the wreckage. The unimaginable force of nature landed Malachi in the hospital, fighting through serious injuries—a battle that captured the hearts of many across the nation.

But out of devastation came unity. Local residents, leaders, and organizations stepped up in powerful ways to restore hope and healing, proving once again that the heartbeat of Henry County is its people.

Brothers in Action: James Earl Acey Lodge #600

Under the compassionate leadership of Worshipful Master Ricardo Utai, the James Earl Acey Lodge #600 wasted no time in mobilizing aid. The lodge provided immediate relief with hot meals, bottled water, and hands-on assistance—from securing broken windows to helping neighbors cover exposed roofs and walls. Their motto, “Service Before Self,” echoed loudly as they became one of the first boots-on-the-ground teams in the affected neighborhoods.

City Leaders Take the Lead

Mayor Carlor Grier and the Locust Grove City Council didn’t just offer words—they brought tangible support. In collaboration with Chick-fil-A, the city hosted a community outreach event, distributing free Chick-fil-A sandwiches to families in need. This effort brought comfort, nourishment, and smiles in the middle of heartbreak.

Former Mayor Pro Tem Vincent Williams also joined the cause, providing free dumpsters throughout the area so residents could begin the massive task of cleaning up debris. His quick action helped many families begin the journey toward rebuilding with dignity.
